“MY GOD SHALL SUPPLY ALL OF YOUR NEED.” —PHILIPPIANS 4:19
Only once in Scripture do we see Jesus commanding a miracle to provide for His own needs when He sent Peter to catch a fish that contained a coin. The purpose of the miracle was to pay for both their taxes.
Of course, He could have arranged for Peter to catch a whale filled with gold coins, but He didn’t do that. He supplied just enough to meet their tax obligations; just what they needed for the moment.
The Apostle Paul tells us, “My God shall supply all of your need.”
Notice that he didn’t say all of my wants, but rather all of my needs.
Don’t misunderstand. God is not against wealth. As a father, I don’t just want to provide for my children; I long to bless them. Similarly, God wants and does bless us, but the promise is to provide for all of our needs.
Jesus tells us not to be worried or anxious about the basic necessities of life: “Your Father knows you need all these things,” He assures us (Luke 12:30).
Sometimes we can’t see how God is going to provide for us. We forget that He has resources we know nothing about. He can supersede the laws of nature if necessary. I’m sure Peter, in his wildest imagination, never thought about catching a fish that had a coin in its mouth! Jesus exercised His Kingship over nature in this instance to provide what was needed.
Peter must have been a fun guy to hang around with because Jesus was always providing for him. He healed his mother-in-law; helped him catch a boat sinking load of fish; enabled him to walk on water; and after the resurrection, when Peter was in jail, He sent an angel to open the door and let him out! No wonder the fisherman who knew all about casting nets encouraged believers to cast “all your care upon Him, for He cares for you” (1 Peter 5:7).
Maybe your back is up against a wall today, but trust that God has your back. If you throw out your nets at Jesus’ word, you are always going to have a catch, you’re always going to be full, and you’re always going to have everything you need.
