Alarms, traffic, coffee to wake you up, demanding people and pressing deadlines. Piles of housework, paperwork, online demands, and in some cases, life-altering situations that you are required to facilitate.
Work is hard—even if you like what you do!
When you are a Christian, there is a work ethic to which we are called: to do the very best we can, no matter where we work, whom we work for, or what we do. Even if the work seems tedious, menial, or below your skill levels, if that is where you find yourself at this moment in time, we are called to “work heartily”—give it your best.
If you feel unappreciated or deal with difficult people, be patient, set a good example, and know God has you there for a reason—to be a light in what might be a dark world for some people.
“A dairy maid can milk cows to the glory of God,” said Martin Luther.
C.S. Lewis, one of the most qualified candidates at Oxford for a professorship position, was overlooked for years while others less qualified were promoted. But years later, I doubt if many of us know the names of those other candidates, but the whole world has heard of Narnia, Mere Christianity and Lewis’ many other accomplishments. His writing has spiritually encouraged and inspired millions of people.
We are working for the Lord, not just a boss. Work hard whether the boss is watching or not. Be honest, encourage co-workers, and remember, your Boss in Heaven is watching and will reward you in His time and manner.
